Stillwater Atelier
StudioApproach and process

Fewer things, made carefully.

Approach

Site first

We read the wind, sun, slope and neighbours before we draw a line. Most of a good plan is already in the land.

Restraint

A short list of materials, used honestly. Each wall, window and joint has to earn its place.

Long life

We choose finishes that wear well and details that can be repaired, so the house is still good in fifty years.

Process in five stages
  1. 01

    Brief

We visit the site, listen, and write down what the household needs. We agree a budget range and a rough programme before any drawing starts.

  2. 02

    Concept

Two or three simple ideas, drawn as plans, sections and models. You choose one and we refine it together.

  3. 03

    Resolve

Every junction, material and fitting is drawn and checked. We coordinate engineers, energy and the planning permit.

  4. 04

    Tender

We prepare documents that builders can price accurately, then help you compare quotes and choose a builder.

  5. 05

    Build

We visit site regularly, answer questions, review claims and carry the work through to handover and the first year of use.

Practice

A small team by choice, so the people you meet are the people who draw your house.

Directors: Anika and Tomas, demo practice, not registered. Team: two architects, one designer and a studio manager.
