A small studio with a slow routine
Fern & Kiln is a ceramics and homewares studio in Australia. We make the things we want in our own kitchens.
How it started
The studio began with one wheel, a borrowed kiln and a simple idea: make mugs and bowls that people reach for without thinking. Nothing precious, nothing fussy, just good shapes that feel right in the hand.
Years later it is still a small operation. Every piece is thrown, trimmed, glazed and packed in the same few rooms. When you order from us, a person has handled your piece at every step.
How we work
We make in batches, which means colours sell out and come back. The clay is a durable stoneware, fired twice at high temperature so the glaze is hard and food safe. We leave a little of the clay showing on the base of each piece, because it is honest and it grips the table.
Small differences between pieces are normal. A glaze might run a little thicker on one mug than another. We think that is a good thing, but if anything arrives with a real fault, we will make it right.
Made to be used
Dishwasher safe where we can make it so, and sized for real kitchens, not shelves.
Made in small batches
We would rather sell out of a colour than rush a kiln load.
Packed with care
Paper and card packaging, sized to the piece, so it arrives in one piece.
